SJC, Elkhart Co. schools participating in Summer Food Service Program
SAINT JOSEPH, ELKHART COUNTY, IND-The final school bell of the year is ringing across Michiana. But, as kids head into summer break, schools will still work to make sure every kid has food to eat.
Indiana’s Department of Agriculture funds the “Summer Food Service Program” each year. Several schools in Saint Joseph and Elkhart counties are participating.
The program has been in place for more than 40 years. It provides breakfast, lunch, or both on certain days and times throughout the summer break.
Sponsors who serve healthy free meals and snacks to kids 18 and younger from low-income families are reimbursed.
Several public and private nonprofit groups sponsor the initiative.
Each had to submit an application and receive training on how to run a successful program.
The Indiana Department of Education shows an interactive map of all counties enrolled on their website HERE.
