South Bend announces launch of 2024 street paving season

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The City of South Bend announced the launch of its 2024 paving season, with a list of 50 streets selected based on a surface condition assessment completed in 2023.

City officials say the assessment was conducted by capturing video and analyzing pavement distresses through software.

The software then produced a score between zero and 100 for the streets' condition.

Officials say the streets with the lowest scores have been prioritized for paving.

According to the city, once crews begin work on a street, it will take about three to five days to complete the work.

The streets must be milled and prepped prior to paving and will be closed during the working hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Signage will be posted before construction starts so residents and businesses are made aware of the work.

Motorists should expect delays and detours while a street is being paved.

Motorists are asked to slow down in construction zones and use alternate routes.

Motorists are also asked to be mindful of workers.

City officials say in addition to paving, workers will be conducting preventative maintenance such as crack sealing and micro-surfacing throughout the season.
