South Bend art gallery helps local artists benefit with 'Rent-A-Wall' idea

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -

Two local gallery owners have been making it easier for artists to display their work in the heart of South Bend’s West Side. And now they have a brand new idea that benefits both the artists and the gallery.

“I was born and raised here and I’ve seen it go through a lot of changes so I’m really happy to see some positive things happening,” said Peggy Stevens, a local artist at Gallery 2910 in South Bend.

It’s now the only gallery in town where you can rent a wall to show off your artwork.

“We love to entertain, that’s a given, and we also love to get the community involved,” said Julian Alcantar, Co-Owner of Gallery 2910.

Gallery 2910 owners Julian Alcantar and Greg Tenhave have made it so both the artist and the gallery can benefit from the work put in.

“Gallery 2910 is a creative space for the celebration of self-expression. Our goal is just to improve the arts and entertainment,” said Alcantar.

Artists can buy a membership for $25.00 a month to rent their own wall. The benefit? The artist walks away with 100% of the money made from that sale.

“So far we have about 12 artists right now. We also give the chance to those artists who are not necessarily “there yet” if you will, but still want to. We all learn from each other,” said Alcantar.

One artist there says it gives Michiana artists a chance.

“The west side has needed some boost and this is great, its gets the local artists so that they can put their work up and get known a little bit,” said Stevens.

And owners say this isn’t just for the pros.

“Anyone who wants to be a part of it, were always looking to collaborate,” said Alcantar.
