South Bend awarded $7M grant for continued lead hazard reduction efforts

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The City of South Bend announced its Department of Community Investment has been awarded a $7M Lead Hazard Reduction Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes.

City officials say the grant will continue funding efforts to address lead-based paint hazards in South Bend homes for an additional four years.

“Our historic neighborhoods and homes enrich South Bend and must be safe for current and future generations,” said Mayor James Mueller. “The City is proud to invest in our older homes in partnership with the federal government to protect our families and children from lead exposure.”

Officials say funding is available for owner-occupied and rental units built before 1978, with income qualifying occupants.

Priority is given to households where children younger than 6 or pregnant individuals reside.

The program will provide comprehensive lead inspection and risk assessments along with lead safe repairs at no cost to eligible households.

Applications for the program are currently open.

Residents and property owners interested in applying or learning more can visit the city's website or call 311 for assistance.
