South Bend brothers open brewery

SOUTH BEND – If you want to read ‘made in South Bend’ off your next sip of beer, there’s a new brew for you. The Four Horsemen Brewing Company is opening its doors for the first time on Thursday. Local brothers Ben and Sam Roule said on Wednesday they decided to start the local microbrewery, along with their father, eight months ago and on soon you’ll be able to sample it.



“We just felt that South Bend was a perfect city for it. Since they didn't have a microbrewery,” said Ben Roule.



The brothers have been selling and marketing beer for some time. "We were a wholesaler in the area. We came up around beer. We grew up around beer. So we know beer,” said Sam Roule.



With craft beers growing in popularity the brothers decided it was time to give it a try.



“We kind of been thinking about it for awhile, and there was no better time than then to start putting this dream in motion,” said Sam.



The brothers left their jobs in December and started testing beer in Sam’s barn. “We purchased a small pilot system to test batch some beers to just try to figure out what our initial line up would be,” said Sam.



Now inside the brewery the bar has a full list of what the new micro-brew has to offer. "All hand crafted ales and lagers,” said Ben. The Four Horsemen’s premiere list includes Pale Ale, Irish Stout, Blondie Ale, Brown Ale, Black Lager, I.P.A., Evil Genius, and Pumpkin Ale.



But these brewers aren’t done just yet. “We'll continue to produce more beers more craft beers and have some higher alcohol content beers as well as we move down the road,” said Ben.



For now they just can’t wait to serve the first glass. “We're all excited and we're just ready to get some beer out there so people can try it. So people can come in here and drink it as well,” said Ben.



The Four Horsemen Brewing Company opens first on Thursday, August 18.



The Taproom is open Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 8 p.m.



Saturday’s from noon to 6 p.m. and Home Notre Dame Football Saturday’s from 7 a.m. to noon.



The brewery is located at 710 Fellows St. in South Bend.
