South Bend Common Council creating social media guidelines

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Common Council is in the process of creating social media guidelines for elected officials.

The Council's Information and Technology Committee met Wednesday night to discuss the first draft of the proposed social media policy.

There are no formal rules set in place for how city officials should conduct themselves online, but after a couple of recent controversial incidents, some council members feel the need for guidelines.

The entire Common Council and the city's law department are looking over the first draft of the guidelines.

Councilman Tim Scott is serving as the chair of the committee. He says that the committee plans on meeting again soon to talk about the next step, including deciding what penalties will be put in place for breaking the rules.
