South Bend Community Schools mourns tragic loss of student

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The community and the South Bend Community School Corporation mourn the loss of 12-year-old Josiah Small, who was pronounced dead at the scene following a shooting on Friday, October 27.

The South Bend Community School Corporation also grapples with discussing Small's death with his middle school peers and friends.

SBCSC's Superintendent, C. Todd Cummings, PhD., shares plans of telling Small's peers at Dickinson Fine Arts Academy this upcoming week about what happened to their friend and classmate.

"Gun violence continues to cast a dark shadow over our community, and it is imperative that we unite to put an end to these senseless acts," Cummings writes in a press release.

The administration's main priority is to support students and staff throughout this time as social workers will provide assistance and comfort during this heartbreaking tragedy.

A GoFundMe has been set up to cover funeral and burial costs.
