South Bend house fire called 'suspicious'

SOUTH BEND, Ind.  -- Several crews tackled a house fire, on Haney Avenue, near Fellows Street. It sparked around 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Investigators are calling the fire suspicious.

They say the homeowner was at work when his two-story home caught fire. A power-line also fell down behind the home, making it difficult for firefighters to get inside. The house is a total loss. Battalion Chief Carl Buchanan is calling this one suspicious.

"At this time everything is suspicious. If the homeowner is not home, you have to question how it happened and how it all started."

Neighbors said they ran over to the fire after hearing all the sirens and seeing the flames.

"One of the neighbors said flames were coming through both sides of the window and on top. One side of the house was completely engulfed, you know -- covered in flames," said Anthony Faulstich.
