SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Wednesday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office charged Erick R. Hordos, a 41-year-old man of South Bend, with three counts following an incident where a shotgun was discharged and a car crashed near IU South Bend on Monday, which led to the university going on a shelter in place status.

Hordos was charged with one count of Intimidation as a Level 5 Felony, Criminal Recklessness as a Level 6 Felony, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident as a Class B Misdemeanor.

On Monday, after officers responded to the 1000 block of S. 23rd Street in South Bend for a shots fired call, they found Hordos' girlfriend, who told them he fired her shotgun into the ground near her and left in her black Chevrolet Impala.

Officers also spoke with neighbors who witnessed the altercation and confirmed the story. They further stated that they had heard a woman screaming for help. When they investigated, one of them asked Hordos what was going on, to which he said Hordos pointed the shotgun at him and told him to go back inside.

Video footage from their residence also showed the fighting and the gunshot being fired.

Hordos' girlfriend advised officers that Hordos was struggling with depression and had taken her shotgun to kill himself.

While at the residence, Hordos' girlfriend's Impala crashed near the intersection of Clover Street and Northside Boulevard, after which, witnesses report seeing a man leave the vehicle and shooting a shotgun.

On Tuesday, Hordos called officers in order to turn himself in. He stated that he may have broken his foot in the crash and threw the shotgun into the woods so that he could not shoot himself. Hordos was transported to Memorial Hospital for treatment, and officers were later able to recover the shotgun.

Hordos is currently held at the St. Joseph County Jail with no bond and with his first court date set for Thursday.
