South Bend mayor and police chief walk kids to school

SOUTH BEND — South Bend students had some visitors on their walk to school Wednesday morning.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg and South Bend Police Chief Ron Teachman walked with students to school in pods for national "Walk and Bike to Work Day."

It was a way to introduce students to another way to get to school while getting exercise.

"It was great having the mayor come out and walk with the kids. The kids were really excited about walking with him today. They usually don't walk to school, so this is a different experience for them," said Robin Meleski, director of health education with the St. Joseph Health Department.

Teachman says the walk is a good way to encourage safe physical activity for South Bend children.
