South Bend Police identify suspect in 2021 shooting that killed 19-year-old

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - South Bend Police have identified a suspect in a deadly shooting on Yukon Street back in 2021.

Quadir Quiroz, 18, was charged with murder on Friday.

He is accused of killing 19-year-old Ashanti Hines as she sat parked in a vehicle in the 1000 block.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Hines was not the intended target. Instead, Quiroz and another man were allegedly shooting at a man she was in the vehicle with.

While serving a warrant to Quiroz three days after the shooting, police found a gun at a residence he was at whose casings matched those found at the scene of Hines’ murder, according to police reports.

A DNA profile from the grip of the gun was at least one trillion times more likely if it originated from Quiroz and three unknown people than from four unknown, unrelated individuals, police said.

Three witnesses also told investigators Quiroz and the second man killed Hines.

Two witnesses specifically said Quiroz and the man admitted they were shooting at the intended target but killed Hines instead, reports said.

Quiroz will appear in court on September 28 for his initial hearing.
