ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A South Bend Orthopedic Surgeon made history over the summer, becoming the first surgeon in the U.S. to perform a revolutionary new spinal procedure solo, and the first to do it outside of the state of Minnesota.

Dr. Deepak Reddy leads the national clinical trial for the SynerFuse Procedure, focusing on the safety of combining a spinal fusion with neuromodulation.

The result would be reduction of residual pain that around 40% of patients are left with after a standard spinal fusion.

Right now, patients are usually prescribed opiates to treat that pain. Developing a tolerance to the medication can lead to subsequent surgeries.

By planting a small, digital implant under the skin, patients are able to control pain-relieving electrical signals through an app on their cell phone.

This device would then eliminate the need for opioid prescriptions after a spinal fusion.

While the surgery has only been performed 12 times, the results have been extremely positive.

Doctors expect to move past the trial phase and perform the surgery on a larger scale all across the U.S., in the next few years.

If you suffer from chronic back pain and are wondering if this procedure could be a good option for you, you can reach out to Dr. Reddy at the South Bend Ortho Clinic.
