South Bend VA Clinic opens

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The wait is finally over for Michiana Veterans.

Monday marks the grand opening of South Bend's new VA Out-patient Clinic.

The Clinic is expected to serve more than 37,000 veterans living in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties.

Right now, the closest clinics are in Fort Wayne and Indianapolis.

The $6.7 million dollar expansion was announced in early January.

Veterans in attendance for the announcement were excited about the news.

"There's rows, just rows of seats and people just sitting in these seats.. waiting for their turn, waiting to get taken care of," says Howard Wiseman, a Vietnam Veteran.

The 65,000 square foot facility is about ten times the size of the current South Bend Clinic.

It will offer expanded mental care, laboratories, and other necessary departments to care for Michiana veterans.

Monday's grand opening ceremony at the clinic on West Western is set for 2 p.m.
