South Shore Line unveils new 11th Street Station and parking garage in Michigan City
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Representatives with South Shore Line, Flaherty & Collins, and Michigan City unveiled the new 11th Street Station and parking garage Wednesday morning.
This project is part of South Shore's Double Track Northwest Indiana Project.
David Flaherty, CEO and Principal of Flaherty & Collins, said, Yes, this is a big day for Michigan City and NICTD with the opening of the 547 space, parking garage, and train station, which is the first phase of this master development where we've got another 12-story residential tower coming connected to the building."
The parking garage holds 542 parking spaces, including 437 priority spots for South Shore passengers Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.
During other times, the garage spaces will be available to the general public, which officials hope encourages broader use of the downtown area.
Extra passenger parking is available adjacent lot located east of the station and north of the platforms.
"Yeah, well, we heard David Flaherty, for Flaherty and Collins, talk about the economic growth that the generation of hundreds of 1000s dollars of property tax, significant sales tax as well, and local income tax as a result of the project itself.," said President of the South Shore Line Mike Noland.
"And then other projects will follow when they see how successful this project is anchored right here at the South Shore station. So, this is just the beginning. It's the tip of the iceberg to the economic development this rail project will bring to Michigan City and to other stations along our lines."
