Special needs athlete allowed to play sports in Michigan

ISHPEMING, Mich. --

A 19-year-old special needs student will be able to play sports after all.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association voted to amend its age limit rule.

Students who've been held back before high school and those who have a documented disability are now exempt.

Ishpeming student Eric Dompierre pushed for the change. He has Down syndrome and started school late.

The MHSAA says 94-percent of schools voted for the exemptions.
