St. Joe County property tax ordinance withdrawn

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Earlier tonight Councilman Jamie O’Brien confirmed in a Facebook post that the St. Joseph County Council will no-longer vote on the ordinance to raise property taxes.

The Facebook post read, “St. Joseph County Council withdrew the ordinance to raise property taxes. Yippie !!!!”

The 2008 state law called the “Circuit Breaker” caps property taxes paid by homeowners and businesses.

The ordinance would’ve increased rates for property owners whose taxes haven’t reached the maximum rate allowed by state law.
