St. Joseph County Council approves tax relief for seniors

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - The St. Joseph County Council voted Tuesday to approve a three-year property tax relief program for residents ages 55 and older.

The county’s new law, sponsored by councilmembers Amy Drake and Dan Schaetzle, ensures these residents will pay no more than a 2% increase on their property taxes for the next three years, regardless of income level.

Taxes assessed by the county that are over 2% will be forgiven, Drake said.

Taxpayers who want the benefit must file with the county first.

A form to do so will be on the county auditor’s home page in the near future. There, taxpayers will also find a list of requirements needed to get the tax relief.
