St. Joseph County Department of Health tips on staying prepared in extreme cold

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - The St. Joseph County Department of Health has issued a public health advisory for staying prepared and warm ahead of the below zero temperatures this weekend.

The department's recommendation of the following is to prevent serious life-threatening health problems from cold temperatures and to prevent cold-related illness and injury:

  • Be prepared:
    • Prepare your home and car for winter, making sure you have a way to heat your home safely during a power failure.
      • Keep a multi-purpose, dry-chemical fire extinguisher nearby when using alternative heating sources.
      • Never use a charcoal or gas grill indoors, as the fumes are deadly.
      • Keep extra blankets, flashlights, batteries, matches, first aid kits, manual can openers, snow shovels, rock salt, and any special need items on hand.
      • Stock a few days' of water supply, required medications, and non-perishable foods.
  • Monitor the temperature of your home, Infants and persons over 65 are especially susceptible to the cold.
  • Dress warmly and stay dry. It is important when going outdoors to remember to wear several layers including a hat, scarf, mittens, snug sleeves, and a water-resistant coat & boats.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure outdoors, and if you have pets, be sure to bring them inside or provide adequate shelter to keep them warm.
  • Eat and drink wisely. This includes avoiding alcoholic or caffeinated beverages as they cause the body to lose heat quicker.
  • Avoid exertion, as cold weather puts a strain on the heart.

The department warns that the cold can cause hypothermia, which will result in abnormally low body temperature and rendering it difficult to think clearly or move well.

In addition, frostbite is a concern of the department as it will injure the body and cause a loss of feeling and color in affected areas.
