St. Joseph County inmate jumps headfirst from second floor of jail

ST. JOSEPH CO., Ind. -- A correctional officer at the St. Joseph County Jail is on paid administrative leave.

This comes after an inmate on suicide watch injured himself on Thursday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. during the inmates' recreational time.

Police said the inmate distracted the guard, went upstairs, wriggled through the bars, and dangled over the edge.

Guards tried to react but couldn't stop him in time.

That's when the inmate fell headfirst from the second floor.

He hurt himself in the fall and had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment.

No one knows what prompted him to jump and there is no word yet on his current condition.

The incident is still under investigation.
