NOW: St. Patrick’s Parade takes place today in downtown South Bend

SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. --Today’s 24th annual parade is scheduled to begin at 11 AM today.

The parade will begin west on Jefferson Boulevard from Notre Dame Avenue to Niles Avenue, turning north and finishing at Washington Street.

The East Race's greening will take place immediately after the parade. Carter advises getting to the area as soon as possible because of how quickly the water moves, she says that the safe dye will only last a few minutes.

“I think because we have a little bit of Irish in our community with the Fighting Irish. It's a fun holiday, people get excited,” Carter said.

Do expect road closures. Those roads include Jefferson Boulevard between Niles Avenue and Frances Street between Washington Street. There will be free parking at the Zion Church lot, the AM General lot, and the Everwise Credit Union lot.

This year’s parade will feature co-grand marshals Terry McFadden and Swoop – two longtime Michiana legends who are retiring this year. Free goodies will also be distributed before and after the parade.

Following the parade, there will be several different celebrations, such as a traditional corn beef and cabbage dinner at St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a beer garden hosted by Howard Pork.

“It’s just a really fun event. It's free, the weather is going to be awesome. It's supposed to snow next week, so get out of the house. Now’s the time, it’s going to be 60 today and sunny. Come out and enjoy this wonderful community event,” Carter said.
