Staying cool while attending the Elkhart County Fair

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County 4-H Fair officially opened Friday. Officials are encouraging fairgoers to stay hydrated and take breaks to stay cool in the heat.

This year's heat isn't quite as bad as last year, but fair officials are prepared for anything.

"We have air conditioned buildings on the grounds, we have misting tents put up around the fair for people. If they feel really hot, they are able to go in and get cooled off,” said Gale Gerber of the Elkhart County Fair.

The heat isn't just rough for people at the fair. 4-H participants are working overtime to keep their animals cool and hydrated.

"Well I shear them so they keep cool and I give them a lot of water. I always make sure their water buckets are full,” said Austin Hinsen, 4-H participant.

While the heat can be oppressive at times- officials and regulars say it's all a part of the experience.
