'Steve's Run' returns for the 51st run in downtown Dowagiac

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- Downtown Dowagiac will be holding the 51st running of the original Road and Trail race, also known as 'Steve's Run', at 6 p.m. on July 18.
The race will be held in conjunction with the Summer Festival and BBQ competition.
"Our goal is to bring together 350 participants and, of course, that means many more family and friends will be there cheering them on." said Emily Schrock, Manager of Development and Executive Director of the Southwestern Michigan College Foundation Board.
Steve died in 1990 at the age of 22 after a five and a half year long battle with cancer.
The event now raises money for cancer research and a scholarship in Steve's honor titled "David and Steven Briegel Memorial Scholarship".
"We also have a group of cross-country alumni who will gather to walk in Steve’s honor, and, thanks to Steve’s sister, Carrie, we’re excited to bring back the Fire Up signs, a wonderful way to celebrate and remember those we’re running and walking for.” said Schrock.
After Steve’s death, SMC’s annual Road and Trail Race became Steve’s Run, dedicated to all who have fought or are still fighting cancer, with proceeds split between Mayo Clinic cancer research and the Briegel scholarship.
SMC has continued to host Steve’s Run with the support of the City of Dowagiac and through generous donations from community partners.
