UPDATE: Stray pig brought to Humane Society of SJC returned to owners
2:15 P.M. UPDATE: The Humane Society of St. Joseph County says the pig was returned to its owners this afternoon after they saw reports of their missing piglet on the news
ORIGINAL: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Employees at the Humane Society of St. Joseph County got quite the surprise Monday morning after a stray pig was found and brought to the shelter.
"So, as we all know, with firework firework season, we're getting a lot of stray animals in but over the weekend, we got a different type of stray. We got a pot belly pig picked up as a stray on Sunday out in the county off of like new road area, kind of the Wakarusa area, and we're just trying to find this little guy's people," said Humane Society of SJC Executive Director Genny Brown.
"We don't really have a pig pen set up here at the Humane Society, so he's actually in our adoption dog area, in a room in that area until hopefully we can find the owner."
Along with lodging, the Humane Society is not really set up to feed a pig for more than a short period of time.
"You know, special food, those are things which we don't keep pig food stocked here. So we went to Tractor Supply, got him some food. We'll make sure that he gets pretty lots of fresh veggies and fruit and stuff like that too," Brown said.
If the originally family can not be found or does not come forward, the pig will either be sent to a rescue more equipped to handle its needs, or be put up for adoption.
"If this animal is your animal, please give us a call at our regular number. We're here Monday through Saturday, except for we will be closed on Friday for the Fourth of July," Brown said.
"So if you see this message and it's your pig, give us a call and we can try to arrange to get the pig back home to you."
