Streetscape project to begin Monday on Mishawaka Avenue

ABC 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Construction on Mishawaka Avenue for the Streetscape Project begins on Monday, May 19.

During construction, Mishawaka Avenue will be restricted to one westbound lane. Cross streets and the eastbound Mishawaka Avenue ramp from Eddy Street/S.R. 23 will be closed. Eastbound traffic will be detoured down Sample Street to Lincoln Way East to Twyckenham Drive.

Phase one of the project will be on the south side of Mishawaka Avenue and run through early August. Phase two of the project will be on the north side of Mishawaka Avenue running from early August to the end of September.

The project will calm traffic, improve biking and walking infrastructure and promote safety. The project includes new curbs, sidewalks, storm sewers, lighting, and street resurfacing. A raised intersection will be constructed at Mishawaka and Beyer/Longfellow avenues.

Construction is expected to conclude by the end of Sept., weather permitting. Once the construction is complete, the road will consist of two travel lanes and a center turn lane.

Access to businesses will remain open during this time.
