Strong winds prompt INDOT to ask drivers to stay off the roads

The Indiana Department of Transportation is urging drivers, especially those in high profile vehicles, to stay off the roads due to high winds.

INDOT says police agencies across northwest Indiana have reported numerous accidents caused by high winds overturning semis.

On US421 in La Porte County, a semi was blown over and a Jeep ran into the trailer.

On the US20 bypass, a semi was blown over around 2 p.m. and another was blown over around 3:45 p.m. Both accidents happened in the eastbound lanes east of the Mayflower exit.

Both La Porte and St. Joseph counties are under travel advisories.

INDOT advises drivers to stay off the roads if possible and to use caution if you drive.
