NOW: Students react to Harrison Butker commencement speech

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After going viral from his graduation speech at a small catholic college, Kansas City Chief's kicker Harrison Butker, stirred up anger, debate, and even praise from all corners of the internet.

In the speech, Butker touched on several controversial topics like women as homemakers, the LGBTQ community, abortion, covid restrictions, and more.

Now, as Notre Dame prepares for its commencement, senior Megan Howley, saw the speech go viral on Tik Tok and says her jaw hit the floor.

“I think it would be kind of disappointing for me if I was in the graduates' shoes, to receive that message after working so hard for four years,” said Howley.

Another Notre Dame student calling out Butker, says he is using faith to put other people down.

“That sort of mentality is not something, in my mind, what the catholic church stands for, shouldn't be a model or an excuse to defend what was said,” said Julia Florek Carlson, another student at Notre Dame.

On the other side, legendary Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz supported Butker on 'X' saying in part, "Your commencement speech showed courage and conviction and I admire that. Don't give in."

The NFL also released a statement saying, “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger."

Butker has not addressed the backlash yet, but there is a Change.org petition for the Chiefs to drop Butker for his comments.
