The city of Sturgis has declared a Local State of Emergency due to the severe damage caused by storms that came through Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Crews are working to restore power to 700 customers and have restored power to approximately 2,200.

The city says crews have estimated around 15 miles of power lines outside the city were damaged, including over 40 downed power poles.

Service is expected to be restored to all customers within the city limits by the end of the weekend.

Sturgis Electric customers served from the Mintdale, Balk, Shimmel, and Hydro substations can expect significantly longer timeframes until service is restored, up to a week. Click here to view the map that shows these areas.

Crews will be restoring power to these substations and the customers they serve working from south to north.

Customers with new outage issues, those dealing with tree limbs on power lines, or those dealing with other similar issues are asked to call in to the City of Sturgis Electric 24-hour outage line at 269-659-7255.

The City says it thanks customers for their continued understanding and patience as it deals with this situation.

The City will be holding a special storm damage brush pickup starting August 25th. The City’s compost site is open for residents looking to drop off brush.  Hours for this week are:

  • Friday, August 13th – 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 14th – 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, August 15th – 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
