Sturgis Department of Public Safety extinguishes two fires within 12 hours

STURGIS, Mich. -- Sturgis firefighters responded to two fires within 12 hours of each other over the weekend, according to the Sturgis Department of Public Safety.

Just before midnight on Saturday, officials were dispatched to calls of a structure fire in the 200 block of Grove Street.

Upon arrival, units discovered heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear windows of a residential structure.

The fire was quickly extinguished from the exterior before fire officials cleared the interior of the home, which was reportedly unoccupied.

The fire, smoke and water damage afflicted on the home was determined to be extensive.

Around 12 hours later, just before noon on Sunday, department officers were dispatched for a second residential fire, this time in the 1000 block of Meadowlane Drive.

Firefighters made entry upon arrival and searched the building to find that the home was similarly unoccupied.

The fire was put out and the structure was saved but suffered extensive smoke damage.

The Sturgis Department of Public Safety Fire Marshall is currently investigating the origin of both fires.
