Sturgis Fire Department investigates fire on Maple Street

STURGIS, Mich. – The Sturgis Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the 200 block of Maple Street Saturday evening.

The structure fire was in a multi-family dwelling with residents trapped inside the building.

According to a Facebook post, the Director of Public Safety Geoff Smith was the first to arrive on scene. Smith found two adults and a baby on the second floor with no way to get out.

With the assistance of a neighbor’s ladder, Smith was able to get all three occupants out of the second story window safely.

AS fire crews arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the second story apartment.

Firefighters had to use multiple hand lines and the tower to fully extinguish the fire.

Due to the amount of fire, smoke and water damage the residents from all five units of the apartment building had to be displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Anyone with information about the fire are asked to call the Sturgis Fire Department at (269) 659-7529.
