Suspect accused of setting fire to Berrien County home with seven people inside

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich.—A suspect is in custody for allegedly setting fire to a home with seven people inside of it, the Lincoln Township Police Department said in a post to its Facebook page on Thursday.

On March 25, around 10:30 p.m., officers with the Lincoln Township Police Department along with the Lincoln Township Fire Department responded to the Spring Lake Mobile Home Park located on W. John Beers Road regarding a house fire.

The fire was extinguished before officers arrived. 

During their investigation, officers identified an intoxicated 28-year-old Ohio woman as a suspect and arrested her at the mobile home park, according to the police department.

Witnesses reported to police that the suspect is a family member of the homeowners and drove to the home because of a family dispute, reports said.

According to police, the suspect allegedly set the home on fire in response to the dispute.

Seven people were inside of the home at the time of the fire, including two adult men, an adult woman and four children ranging in age from four to 13 years old. 

The suspect was taken to the Berrien County Jail on suspicion of arson and attempted murder, police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident. Damage to the home is estimated to be about $7,000.

Police did not release the suspect's identity.
