Suspect in custody after shooting at Dowagiac apartment complex

DOWAGIAC, Mich.—A 23-year-old suspect is in custody after a shooting at a Dowagiac apartment complex injured a 14-year-old, according to Dowagiac Police.

On Sunday around 11:25 a.m., police were notified that hospital staffers were treating a 14-year-old victim with a gunshot wound.

The victim told police that they were sitting on the floor of a living room of an apartment at Vineyard Place Apartments when the victim hear a loud noise and noticed pain in their foot.

After realizing they had been shot, the victim went to the hospital for treatment. The victim was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.

A suspect was contacted by police and later turned himself into a deputy.

The suspect told police that he was handling the gun and accidentally fired the handgun into the floor of an upstairs bedroom of the apartment.

Police recovered the weapon along with other evidence.

Dowagiac Police arrested the 23-year-old male suspect from Cassopolis on suspicion of assault with a dangerous weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm. The suspect’s identity is being withheld pending arraignment.

The incident remains under investigation
