Suspects stealing copper wire from light poles

LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- Indiana State Police are investigating the theft of more than $300,000 worth of copper wire from light poles. INDOT is asking for your help to catch the suspects.

In the last year, the suspects have gotten away with more than $300,000 worth of wire - just in INDOT's northwest district.

INDOT says the crime is on the increase everywhere and they're having trouble catching the suspect.

ISP thinks the suspects are dressing as utility or INDOT workers to hide their crime.

Now INDOT is asking drivers for help.

"They could be wearing highway safety gear, or official looking clothing or they could be in regular clothes. No matter who they are, if you see somebody by these highway lighting poles, we want you to call 911 or Indiana State Police. And they will investigate anyone near these poles," said Matt Deitchley, INDOT Northwest District.

There are more than 4,000 light poles in the northwest district.
