SUV stolen with 2 children inside, children now safe

ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Police are searching for an SUV that was stolen with two children inside. The children have been recovered and are safe.

The SUV, a black Honda CRV, was stolen from the Concord Mall Friday afternoon. Police say a 15-year-old girl and her 10-month-old sister were in the vehicle at the time, parked in the lot outside Carson's,.

While their mom was inside the store,  a woman they didn't know got into the SUV around 3:45 p.m.

The teenager told police, the suspect told her to get out of the car and that she had a gun. But, police say the girl refused to leave without her sister.

Police say the teenager FaceTimed her mother from the car. While her mom couldn't see what was going on, police say she could hear the vehicle moving so she ran out of the store and called 911.

The suspect drove them five miles down the road and dropped them off at McDonald's on US 33. Police say the teenager FaceTimed her mom again to tell her where she was and that she was safe.

Police say after dropping off the teenager and the infant, she drove off and hasn't yet been located

The vehicle is a black 2008, Honda CRV, with a Cubs Sticker in the rear window and license plate 982DDX.

Police say the suspect is described as a white female with brown hair and hazel eyes, wearing a pink tank top.
