ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - The St. Joseph County Metro SWAT unit responded to a domestic situation on Locust Road Tuesday evening.
At 7:26 p.m., officers were called to a residence in the 61000 block of Locust Road, just south of Kern Road, on a report that a man punched his mother and pulled the trigger of a handgun twice while pointing the handgun at his mother's chest.
When police arrived, they learned the man was alone inside the residence and believed to be armed.
Family members outside the home told dispatch and officers that the man suffered from mental illness, including schizophrenia.
Officers surrounded the home but were unable to convince the man to exit unarmed.
At 9:10 p.m., SWAT officers begin making their way into the home when the man jumped out of a rear window and ran, reports said.
He was caught a short distance from the home with a loaded handgun, police said.
Stephen Teacher, 36, was arrested on the charges of domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon, domestic battery, and resisting law enforcement.
Teacher is scheduled for a jail mental health evaluation at the St. Joseph County Jail.
