NEW BUFFALO, Mich. -- A 24-year-old man is believed to have drowned at the New Buffalo City Beach Thursday evening, according to New Buffalo Police.
First responders were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. to search for a man who disappeared near the break wall.
While rescuers searched for the swimmer, they experienced waves that were nearly 6-feet. The strong waves hindered the search effort.
Two officers suffered minor injuries during the search.
The search Thursday was conducted by New Buffalo Police Marine Division, US Coast Guard, Chikaming Township Fire Department Water Rescue Unit, New Buffalo Fire Departments, Berrien County Sheriff's Office, and Pokagon Tribal Police.
The US Coast Guard helicopter and the New Buffalo UAV were used to conduct aerial searches.
The missing swimmer, from Villa Ridge, Missouri, has not been located.
