Teenagers injured on their way to prom

LAGRANGE TOWNSHIP, CASS COUNTY, MI -- A scary night for two Cass County teenagers on their way to the Union High School prom. 


The Cass County Sheriff's Department said 16-year-old Shawn Haley, the driver, tried to pass a car on Saturday evening around 7:30 p.m. while traveling west bound on Peavine Street near Oak Grove Road.


He lost control of his vehicle and ended up crashing into a 20 foot revine.


Haley's passenger and prom date, 17-year-old Kaitlyn Brooks was taken to a Dowagiac Hospital.


Haley is listed in serious condition in Memorial Hospital's ICU.


The Dowagiac Union North student was flown to the South Bend hospital about 30 minutes after EMS crews were able to free him from the crash.


The students were less than 2 miles away from the prom venue when the accident occured.


Cass County Sheriff's Department is investigating the case.
