Volunteers needed as City of Elkhart launches 'Trees for the Hart'

ELKHART, Ind – The City of Elkhart will kick off its "Trees for the Hart" program to plant trees on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Roosevelt Park.

Officials say Elkhart was one of several cities, including South Bend and Goshen, awarded funding to support urban tree planting.

The city received $1 million to plant over 2,000 trees by 2028, according to officials.

Through the new program, officials will implement tree-planting efforts throughout the city.

At Saturday's ribbon-cutting for "Trees for the Hart," officials hope to plant up to 100 trees that day with help from residents of Elkhart.

Volunteers will be given hot chocolate, coffee, and donuts.
