SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The new plan to transform much of Potawatomi Park in South Bend is being considered.
The city is shutting down the popular public pool there permanently, after 70 years, and planning a major renovation.
Officials say the master plan is a vision that spans 5 to 20 years, but they're focused on tackling immediate needs like the recently closed pool, park infrastructure, and sorting out parking and traffic issues.
The city says a key aspect of the master plan is preserving the park's greenspace.
It also includes several new amenities like an aquatic center, an outdoor cafe, a beer garden, lots of new parking, and revamping lots of the playgrounds for kids.
Dominic Gilbert enjoys visiting the park with his daughter and dog.
He adds he's excited to see the new updates, but hopes they keep the integrity of the park.
“I want to make sure they keep as many trees as possible, cause so many trees have been here forever, they're kind like the stewards of the past," said Gilbert.
You're able to provide feedback on the plan until May 10.
This plan goes to the City Plan Commission on June 17, and eventually to the Common Council for adoption but that date has not been set yet.
