New details on the South Shore Double Track project--in about two weeks, trains will finally start running between Michigan City and Dune Park.
After more than a year of busing commuters between those stations, the stations are set to open on October 16.
According to the Times of Northwest Indiana, railroad President and General Manager Michael Noland gives an update on the remaining work needed for the railroad.
"We have successfully completed out test runs — commissioning and testing the segment between Michigan City and Dune Park," Noland said. "Everything's been tested, everything worked out very well."
Noland said that contractors will be finishing up the first leg of the revamped railroad in the next coming days.
Also, next week, South Shore crews will begin "route familiarization" exercises.
The $378 million project is expected to be completed by May 2024, resulting in a full expanded service along Chicago to South Bend.
Although trains will resume between Michigan City and Dune Park soon, passengers will still continue to be bussed between Dune Park and Gary Metro Center until further notice.
