Three accused of stealing from storage units, leading police on chase

ELKHART, Ind. – Three people were arrested on Saturday after allegedly stealing items from storage units and leading police on a chase, the Elkhart Police Department reported.

At 9:58 p.m., an officer saw a black Ford F150 driving around the side streets of businesses in the 1700 block of South Nappanee Street.

The officer initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Nappanee and Franklin Streets and as backup arrived to assist, the F150 drove away, according to reports.

The F150 traveled west on Franklin Street and the chase ended on Cassopolis Street after stop sticks were deployed.

As the F150 came to a stop, the front seat passenger of the vehicle, identified as 37-year-old Caleb Hardcastle of Mishawaka, ran out of the vehicle. He was captured by an officer.

Everyone in the vehicle was called out and detained.

During the investigation, officers found items several items in the vehicle. Some were allegedly stolen from storage units at Spacemaker Self Storage in Goshen, according to reports.

Hardcastle was arrested for theft, resisting law enforcement, and on outstanding warrants.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 21-year-old Gordon Friant II of South Bend, was arrested for possession of stolen property and resisting law enforcement.

A back seat passenger, identified as 31-year-old Andrew Libera of Niles, was arrested for theft – receiving stolen auto parts.
