Thursday house fire in South Bend extinguished, firefighters treated for heat exhaustion

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Thursday, the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire around 2 p.m. in the 1000 block of Johnson Street.

"Firefighters pulled up on scene to see dark smoke coming from the second story window of the small residential home," SBFD officials said. "The fire was quickly extinguished with overhaul complete and hot spots given plenty of water. The home is currently vacant."

Responding firefighters were treated by an EMS crew after securing the fire to make sure vitals, water intake accomplished, and body temperatures were cooled down before returning to work overhaul on the structure.

"This was due to the warm temperatures we had today," SBFD officials said. "No firefighters were injured during the extinguishment of the fire."

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
