Tornado count in both Indiana and Michigan double the normal amount
One week ago, Thursday, a tornado outbreak narrowly missed Michiana. While some, mainly in LaPorte and Berrien counties, sustained storm damage, most of the area was left unscathed.
However, much of west Michigan wasn't as lucky, with eight tornadoes confirmed by the National Weather Service from last week's storms.
The tornadoes on May 15 sent the tornado count in The Mitten State soaring to 27 tornadoes in the first five months of 2025.
How abnormal is that statistic? The YEARLY average for tornadoes in Michigan is 13. Michigan has doubled its annual tornado count in less than half a year, with both summer and fall severe weather season still left to go.
The numbers are even more staggering in Indiana. Tornadoes in The Hoosier State last week stayed south of Indianapolis for the most part. However, with those twisters now confirmed, the tornado count climbed to 58! Indiana has also doubled the YEARLY average for tornadoes less than halfway through 2025.
Fortunately for both states, severe weather chances look low throughout the rest of the month.
June is typically an active month for severe weather, especially for Michiana. Hopefully, our area and region can get a break. We've definitely earned it.
