Tracking a stolen phone doesn't guarantee its return

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It's one of the most frustrating things that can happen to anyone: losing your cell phone. One woman's phone was stolen and found even though she knows its location, it's not so easy to get it back.

iPhone users have heard the advice to download the "Find My iPhone" app. That's what Kate Gassman did and she's been tracking her stolen phone from South Bend to Mishawaka.

Gassman says she was volunteering at a local nonprofit in South Bend when someone stole her phone and wallet.

Right away, she tracked her phone using the application. She watched it move from South Bend to Mishawaka.

But police say it isn't as easy as looking at the app. The app doesn't pinpoint the exact location if it's in a large building like a warehouse or apartment complex.

Gassman says her phone is in a factory in Mishawaka, which could make it more difficult for officers.

Mishawaka Police said they're doing their best to locate it.
