Traffic restrictions scheduled for Western Avenue beginning July 15

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The South Bend Department of Public Works has announced Western Avenue traffic will be restricted due to the Western Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project beginning July 15 and tentatively ending in mid-November.

Western Avenue from July 15-17 will be closed from Lake Street to Kentucky Street to allow for the installation of a storm sewer and water main. Detour routes will be Sheridan and Olive Streets by way of Sample Street.

From July 18 to mid-November, Western Avenue will be closed from Kenmore Street to Dundee Street. Eastbound traffic will be restricted with a detour running south on Sheridan Street, east on Sample Street to north on Olive Street.

Two-way traffic is expected to reopen around mid-November.

The Western Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project will include streetscape enhancements to the four-block portion of Western Avenue between Dundee and Falcon Streets. The overall improvements are due to the implementation of the West Side Main Streets Plan to create an environment favorable to both commercial and residential investment, according to the department.
