MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Mishawaka Police officers responded to the site of a car that was hit by a train at the Beiger Street crossing south of East Fourth Street on Thursday morning.
Police say the male driver drove his vehicle around the lowered crossing gates. The car was then struck by a train for the Norfolk Southern Railroad.
The driver sustained serious injuries but is expected to survive.
No one else was in the vehicle.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
The Mishawaka Police Department Traffic Bureau is investigating.
