Train comes apart in Mishawaka, ties up traffic

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A passing train caused some traffic tie-ups on Friday afternoon in Mishawaka after a dozen cars broke loose.

Just before 3 p.m., one of the connectors broke as the train was going over the Church Street overpass.

Amazingly, there was no damage, but when the train stopped, it blocked several crossings.

Folks who live nearby told us when they heard the train come apart, they thought it would be much worse.

"I was like, I thought it was a derailment at first and then when I came outside it was that the trains got separated. It sounded like two gunshots, like two shotguns going off." said Randy Kish.

It took crews about an hour to get the cars hooked back up and the train was moving again.
