Two injured in off-road vehicle accident

CLAYPOOL, Ind. -- A 58-year-old man and a juvenile female were injured while riding an off-road vehicle on private property Wednesday evening, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Conservation officers were called to respond to the incident, which happened at 7:32 p.m. near 5527 S. 50 West.

The driver, 58-year-old Kevin Deardorff, was operating the vehicle with the juvenile passenger when he lost control after cresting a hill and hit an embankment.

Deardorff and the passenger were both thrown from the vehicle.

Conservation officers and medics arrived on the scene by 7:40.

Deardorff complained of abdominal and chest pain and was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment.

The juvenile passenger was taken to a hospital in Kosciusko County as a precaution.

Officers said the cause of the crash was the driver operating at speeds unsafe for the terrain, reports said.
