Two St. Joseph County parks close tubing hills due to wind chill

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – Two parks in St. Joseph County closed their tubing hills New Year’s Day due to expected subzero wind chills.

According to the county, the tube hills are closed at St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend and Ferrettie-Baugo Creek County Park in Osceola.

“The severe wind chill factor coupled with the extra wind speed incurred when sliding down the hill on an innertube, combines for an unsafe condition. We are concerned about our staff that stands out on the hill, but especially for families and children who might come out and not be prepared for such harsh conditions,” said County Parks Director, Evie Kirkwood.

Cross country skiing will still be available on St. Patrick’s County Park trails.

The National Weather Service says wind chills could be to be 25 to 30 degrees below zero which can quickly cause frostbite.
