United Way gives away free backpacks stuffed with school supplies

MARCELLUS, Mich. – Students in need of school supplies will be able to pick up one of 1000 backpacks filled with back-to-school goodies on Wednesday.

The United Way of Southwest Michigan and other sponsors will be handing out the backpacks at Marcellus Methodist Church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The organization says five of the backpacks contain a golden ticket that will win a lucky student a prize of either a $50 gift card, a free haircut, dental care kit, or two big boxes of snacks.

Families will also be able to eat for free from the Feeding America of West Michigan’s food truck.
