Unsecured trailer drops freezer in the middle of Ash Road Tuesday morning, two drivers hospitalized
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Drivers on Ash Road in Elkhart County encountered unusual debris on the road Tuesday morning that damaged two vehicles and sent two drivers to local hospitals.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office says reports came in around 10:32 a.m. on May 6 of a freezer in the middle of the road that fell off the back of a trailer and was struck by two different vehicles.
Authorities say 75-year-old Bennie Shaw, of Elkhart, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet GMT south on Ash Road, south of County Road 16.
"[Shaw] was pulling a trailer and had two unsecured freezers on the trailer. One of the freezers fell off the trailer and into the northbound lane," the ECSO said.
"[A 2022 Chevrolet Equinox] struck the freezer which sent the freezer back into the southbound lane where [a 2019 Ford Fusion] struck it."
Shaw and his truck were unharmed while the Equinox sustained major front end damage and the Fusion sustained minor front end damage.
The driver of the Equinox, a 68-year-old woman from Edwardsburg, was taken to the hospital for complaint of side pain.
The driver of the Fusion, a 42-year-old woman from Goshen, was taken to the hospital for high blood pressure.
Shaw was cited for Operating a Vehicle with an Unsecured Load and Failure to Provide Vehicle Registration.
